魏爾倫詩中簡潔、飄忽的形象——月光的色澤、風搖樹葉和雨灑庭園的音樂、無法解讀的大海之美、古風舞蹈的動作、牽線玩偶的心靈——激發起德彪西的音樂想象力。為了喚出《曼陀林》一詩中曼陀林的彈奏,他寫出擊弦彈奏似的和弦,讓五度音程筑起仿佛夢中的塔。為了捕捉“枝杈在歌唱”一行詩的樸實遐想,他無視教科書的規誡讓常用和弦疊置碰撞。在萬花筒一般迸發出來的豐富音響中,全音音階也開始閃現,它到后來成為德彪西最常用的手法之一。全音音階的功能也將這位年輕作曲家推到了我們所說的無調性的邊緣。
